Presentation Title: Practical Applications of Motivational Interviewing in Clinical Practice

6:50-7:00  Questions and Answers (10 minutes)

Couse Description:
This interactive virtual presentation will provide an overview of the spirit and strategies of motivational interviewing.  In addition to didactic presentation, participants will be able to practice strategies and provide case examples to help make the content relevant to their specialty practice.  

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Normalize provider frustration or lack of confidence in communicating with patients about behavior change.
  2. Describe applications of motivational interviewing to brief encounters.
  3. Review specific communication strategies for expressing a concern, providing education, and enhancing patient motivation.

SPEAKER BIO's:

Kristin S. Vickers, Ph.D., is a Professor of Psychology with specialty board certification in Clinical Health Psychology at Mayo Clinic Rochester.  She is Co-Chair of Education for the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology, Program Director for the Medical Psychology Fellowship Program, and Director of the Mayo Clinic Patient Education Research Program.  In these roles, Dr. Vickers approaches education and health by first considering the individual’s values, life experiences, and personal learning and changing style.  Her clinical work is in the primary care setting, where she provides brief evidence-based psychotherapy within an integrated behavioral health model of care.  Dr. Vickers has been recognized at Mayo Clinic with awards for teaching, distinguished service and distinguished clinical care.   

Samuel J. Nayman, Ph.D., is a child clinical psychology post-doctoral fellow in the Mayo Clinic Medical Psychology Fellowship Program.  Dr. Nayman works at the intersection of research and practice, promoting patient health, wellness, and resilience by way of program development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination.  Previously, he completed his doctorate in clinical psychology at Rutgers University as well as his clinical psychology internship at Yale School of Medicine.

Biography

Heather Clark, Ph.D. 

Dr. Clark is the Chair of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She is board-certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairment in degenerative neurologic disease.  Dr. Clark has served as a topic chair for the ASHA convention, program chair of the Conference on Motor Speech, and chair of the fall conference of the North Carolina Speech Language Hearing Association.

Brad King, P.T., M.S.Ed., DScPT 

Brad King, PT, DScPT, MSEd is the Therapy Clinical Education Specialist for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in Rochester, Minnesota. His role includes oversight of new employee orientation, initial and ongoing competency assessment, staff education and continuing professional education programming for therapy staff. Brad is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and has served on the board and executive board of the Minnesota Physical Therapy Association.

Anna Forsman Johnson, M.S., CCC-SLP

Anna Forsman-Johnson is a speech-language pathologist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. She received her clinical training at St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minnesota.  Her clinical responsibilities include diagnosis and treatment of deficits in communication and cognition.  She is currently investigating the feasibility of telepractice for the treatment of language based communication impairments.  She also worked to establish a protocol for cognitive assessment of patients in the acute care setting.

Jill Gruenwald, Au.D.

Jill Gruenwald, Au.D., is the Audiology Supervisor at Mayo Clinic. Her current areas of clinical practice are adult diagnostics and cochlear implants with past experience providing hearing aid services and completing vestibular evaluations. She is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
