20 minutes:  Review of illustrative cases following airway reconstruction.
15 minutes:  Methods to alleviate dysphagia in patients following airway reconstruction
10 minutes:  Discussion, Q & A

Couse Description:
Post-operative swallowing impairment in those individuals who have undergone airway reconstruction is highly likely.  The purpose of this seminar is to review the need for surgical treatment in these patients and the targeted methods adopted for use.  In addition, the consequent changes in swallowing anatomy/physiology will be discussed as well as the techniques employed to prevent and/or mitigate swallowing impairment to the greatest extent possible..

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Explain rationale for surgical decision making in adult airway reconstruction surgery
  • Recognize characteristics of video swallow evaluations of patients with airway reconstruction
  • Discuss how reconstruction decisions result in abnormalities in swallow and methods to mitigate and prevent these abnormalities.

SERIES LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe how to apply new information to provide enhanced assessment and intervention in the areas of
    • Speech sound production
    • Fluency and fluency disorders

Presenter Bios:
Dr. Wiedermann is a pediatric otolaryngology- head and neck surgeon who specializes in airway reconstruction, vascular malformations (in both children and adults) and pediatric secondary sleep surgery. He did his medical school and residency at George Washington University in DC. Following fellowship at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, he moved to Mekelle, Ethiopia where he helped design and create a sustainable, academic and strong otolaryngology residency program. Since starting at Mayo Clinic in 2020, we have created a Global Surgery Track where learners are exposed to the basics of global surgery, partner with local institutions to identify bidirectional needs and then spend time locally to teach, study and improve capacity and sustainability. His research focuses on understanding the global burden of surgical need and how to build capacity and sustainability abroad. He is currently enrolled in a Masters in Global Surgery with the University of British Columbia to help supplement this work.
