Summary: 

Discuss current evidence suggesting that acetazolamide in addition to standardized loop diuretics is more successful in treating volume overload associated with decompensated heart failure

 

Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

Describe the mechanism of action of acetazolamide

Recognize the Acetazolamide in Acute Decompensated Heart Failure with Volume Overload trial

Appraise the use of acetazolamide in conjunction with loop diuretic therapy for treatment of decompensated heart failure

 

Bio:

Reena Yaman completed her undergraduate training in Chemistry and Psychology at the University of Toronto Mississauga, graduate training in medical science researching biomarkers for autoimmune diseases at the University of Toronto, and medical school training at the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine in Arizona. She is a second-year Internal Medicine resident at Mayo Clinic Arizona.
