Session date:

Summary:  Calciphylaxis is a rare and life-threatening syndrome of vascular calcification.  It leads to painful and pruritic skin lesions, and generally has a poor prognosis.  Calciphylaxis typically affects patients with end-stage renal disease. In this study, 19 cases (hemodialysis with calciphylaxis) were matched with 54 (hemodialysis without calciphylaxis). Conditional logistic regression was used to identify a risk factors for calciphylaxis.  Identified risk factors for calciphylaxis included:  higher serum alkaline phosphatase levels, higher serum phosphate levels is, female gender, and lower serum albumin.  Based on these observations, dietary phosphate restriction may be important as well as maintaining adequate nutrition.  Perspective controlled multi center trials should be done to better understand risk factors associated with calciphylaxis.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Define calciphylaxis
  • Explain calciphylaxis clinical manifestations
  • Explain calciphylaxis epidemiology
  • Define calciphylaxis epidemiology
  • Describe calciphylaxis treatment strategies
  • Identify and recognize risk factors associated with calciphylaxis
