Clinical and neurobiological research has considerably advanced our understanding of grief since the time of Kubler-Ross’s stage theory. Decades of clinical science research has yielded the newly included diagnosis of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) in the DSM-5-TR. In this presentation, Dr. Arizmendi will introduce and summarize the evidence base for the DSM criteria including the prevalence and state of the science related to PGD. Dr. Arizmendi will also highlight clinical interview and self-report tools to aid assessment and diagnosis of PGD, and review the latest evidence-based treatment approaches for PGD. Finally, he will review the clinical significance of assessing for PGD in various areas of medical practice, and the importance of differentiating PGD from other characteristically similar disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
