Disparities in Incarceration and Mental Health Services Amongst Black Americans
Mina Ossei, M.D.
Dr. Mina Ossei is a current Psychiatry CL Fellow. Originally from Ghana, Dr. Ossei moved to the United States as a teenager. She has a BS degree in nursing and worked as a nurse for several years before medical school. Dr. Ossei attended Ross University School of Medicine, now in Barbados (previously in the Commonwealth of Dominica). She completed her General Psychiatry Residency at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. Dr. Ossei hopes to work in an underserved setting. She enjoys different cultures, different foods and traveling.
Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Recognize the incarceration rates of Black Americans.
- Examine the prevalence of mental illness and mental health disparity in Black Americans.
- Describe how psychiatrists can address disparity in mental health access, which may reduce incarceration.

Childhood Adversity and Functional Disorders
Ahmed Alhassan, M.B.B.S.
Dr. Alhassan is originally from Sudan, he was born and raised in Doha – Qatar. He finished his medical school at University of Khartoum in Sudan then pursued psychiatry residency and Advanced General Adult Psychiatry fellowship at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Qatar. During his training he was appointed as chief resident in his final year of residency. He has attained full membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in UK (MRCPsych) as well as certification of the Arab Board of Health Specialization in Psychiatry (ABHS – Psych). Due to his interest in consultation – liaison psychiatry he decided to come to Mayo Clinic to do his CL psychiatry fellowship, he will graduate this June. He is also interested in neuromodulation, tele psychiatry and functional disorders.
Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe and recognize the relationship between childhood adversity and functional disorders.
- Examine emerging data about mechanisms that might link childhood adversity to functional disorders.
- Evaluate data from our project entitled, "History of Adversity versus Different Phenotypes of Functional Disorders."
