LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Identify the importance of estimating glomerular filtration rate with easily accessible clinical assays.
- Review current methods for calculating estimated glomerular filtration rate, and how these have adapted as greater population studies have been evaluated.
- Recognize that race is a social construct and identify problems associated with its use as a defining characteristic in medicine.
- Assess additional approaches for estimating glomerular filtration rate that do not include race as a modifier.
- Evaluate the benefits and risks associated with removal of race from these equations and recognize the impact this may have on clinical care and health equity.
