Mayo Test Drive:  An update on findings for a self-administered remote cognitive testing platform and future directions with cross-linguistic test development
Aimee Karstens, PhD, MA

Dr. Karstens completed her doctoral training in clinical psychology at the University of Illinois, Chicago and completed her predoctoral internship at Brown University. She is a 2nd year adult neuropsychology fellow at Mayo Clinic. Her clinical and research interests involve risk factors for cognitive aging and development of biomarkers including cognitive markers. She has a special interest in understudied groups including ethnoracial minorities, sex-specific risk/treatment considerations, and modifiable interventions including diet.

  • Summarize supporting evidence for Mayo Test Drive tests as clinical tools.
  • Identify key considerations for test development with culturally/linguistically diverse groups

Where are all these Transgender Kids Coming From?  Gender Exploration and Identify Formation in Gender Diverse Adolescents

Janice Malay, MD, MSW

Dr. Janice Malay graduated from Tufts Medical School in 2012 and after spending a year helping to establish a medical home for individuals experiencing homelessness in Portland, Maine, she began her General Psychiatry Residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  She remained at the Mayo Clinic for her Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship with anticipated graduation in June 2022.  While completing her medical training, Dr. Malay has been able to integrate a longitudinal experience with the Transgender, Intersex Specialty Care Clinic into both her Residency and Fellowship Experience, initially working with adults and now with young people. She serves in an informal liaison capacity within the Mayo Clinic Psychiatry Department providing clinical guidance, education and advocacy on mental health topics pertinent to gender diverse individuals.

Besides being a physician, Dr. Malay is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker having graduated in 2004 from the University of Southern Maine with a Master’s in Social Work, and she brings her knowledge of family, cultural and institutional systems to her work as a physician.  In addition, Dr. Malay has a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematical Theory and Economics from the University of Rochester in New York and worked as a business analyst for companies such as L.L. Bean before pursuing her career in mental health care.


Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe some factors contributing to the increase of gender diverse young people presenting for care.
  • Conceptualize gender exploration as a component of identity formation using Erik Erikson's Life Stages and James Marcia's Identity Stations.
  • Integrate an understanding of gender exploration and identify formation into a therapeutic approach to working with caregivers struggling to accept and/or support their gender diverse young person.
