PRESENTATION TITLE

What is a Cancer Hallmark and are we Missing any?

PRESENTER(S)
Carlo C. Maley, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Director of the Arizona Cancer Evolution Center, Biodesign Institute and School of Life Sciences, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona

PRESENTER BIO

Carlo C. Maley, Ph.D.,  is a cancer biologist, evolutionary biologist and computational biologist, working at the intersection of those fields. He directs the Arizona Cancer Evolution Center at Arizona State University. His team uses tools from evolution and ecology to help solve four problems in cancer: (1) They use evolutionary and ecological measures of neoplasms to distinguish high from low risk tumors. (2) They develop new approaches for delaying or deflecting the evolutionary trajectories of pre-malignant neoplasms to prevent cancer. (3) They develop new methods to prevent or control the evolution of therapeutic resistance in cancers. (4)  They seek to discover (and translate to human cancer prevention) the mechanisms that have evolved to suppress cancer in large, long-lived animals like elephants and whales – a problem known as Peto’s Paradox.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Describe the foundations of multicellularity.
  • Examine and discuss what it means for a feature of cancer to be a hallmark of cancer.
  • Evaluate the evidence that disruption of differentiation is a hallmark of cancer.
  • Appraise whether the failure to maintain extracellular matrix is also a hallmark of cancer.
