A Community-Based Participatory Approach to Intervention Development
Sydney Kelpin, PhD

Dr. Sydney Kelpin is a second-year medical psychology fellow in the clinical health psychology track at Mayo Clinic. Her primary area of emphasis on fellowship is in integrated behavioral health. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and her doctoral training in clinical psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her primary research interests are in the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practice for substance use disorders, as well as the use of technology-based interventions to improve care access. Additionally, Dr. Kelpin is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and has contributed to NIH-funded research examining health coaching for patients with COPD during her fellowship.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Review the rationale and core principles of community-based participatory research (CBPR).
  • Describe the process of involving community advisory committees in co-developing the research project.
  • Illustrate the value of CBPR in developing tailored, culturally relevant intervention content.

Correlates to Improvement in Sleep in Acute Mania and Depression

Raphael Golebiowski, M.D.

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Dr. Golebiowski is a PGY-4 Psychiatry Resident. He completed his bachelor of science in biochemistry at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. Subsequently studied medicine at the Jagiellonian University Medical College in Krakow, Poland. During training, he became fascinated by the significant overlap of sleep and psychiatry disorders and pursued a sleep medicine fellowship starting this upcoming summer at Mayo Clinic.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize how sleep is impacted during manic episodes.
  • Examine differences between sleep disturbances in patients with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. 
  • Analyze how sleep duration during hospitalization may affect the clinical course.
