Historic Lens on the Family:  Perpetuating or Protective of Illness?
Richelle Brown, M.D.

Originally from central Illinois, Dr. Brown attended University of Illinois for her undergraduate, majoring in anthropology and biology.  She then relocated with her family to North Carolina to attend medical school at Wake Forest School of Medicine, before returning to the midwest for residency.  This summer, she will be moving to Missouri to practice general adult psychiatry within a community hospital.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize the historical basis for stigma by families dealing with psychiatric illness.
  • Review current evidence regarding social influence on illness.
  • Integrate historical stigma with current evidence into a framework for working with families.

Trajectories Before the first Episode:  A Retrospective Chart Review in Olmsted County 1985-2019

Javier Ortiz Orendain, M.D.

Javier Ortiz Orendain is a Mexican PGY-4 resident psychiatrist and is part of the research track. His main interests revolve around early intervention/detection of psychosis and working with severe mental illness. Outside of Mayo he works with the Cochrane Schizophrenia group and forms part of the editorial board. He is anticipating moving to Yale where he will be doing the public psychiatry fellowship.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the health service utilization and mental health events that occur before the first episode of psychosis and mania.
  • Differentiate the trajectories during the prodromal phase between people with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
  • Recognize which mental health diagnosis, substance use and medical illness predate the onset of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
