The Ethics and Spatialities of Clinical Observations en Plein Air in Nineteenth-Century Cities

Brian Hurwitz, MD

INTRODUCTION
Brian Hurwitz is Professor of Medicine and the Arts at King's College London. His research embraces narrative studies in relation to medicine, ethics, law and the logic and literary forms of case reports and anecdotes. He is interested in how history and literature- life writing and fiction- inform ethical awareness. He has published on confidentiality, consent and misrepresentation in medical practice, and in 2012 gave the Lewis Headley Lecture, entitles 'Narrative- the Connective Tissue of Medical Ethics and Humanities' at the UK Institute of Medical Ethics. For nearly a decade he was on the editorial board of the Journal of Medical Ethics and has held honorary chairs at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, University College London, the Sydney University Medical School and the Faculties of Medicine and Arts & Humanities at Hong Kong University. Prior to his current position, he was Professor and Head of Department of Primary Care at Imperial College London.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recall the extent to which nineteenth-century cities offered a fertile environment for medical observations of physical appearances and mental disorders.
  • Recognize the historical, urban, and practice contexts in which such observations took place.
  • Identify ethical issues arising from these contexts, related, for example, to the way such observations were incorporated into medical understandings which retain clinical currency today; and from the manner in which the observations impacted on patients' privacy and influenced relations between patients and practitioners.
