Speaker #1:  Melanie J. Chandler, Ph.D.

Dr. Melanie Chandler is Associate Professor and Chair of the Division of Psychology/Vice Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic Florida. She has strong ties to Mayo Rochester, as she completed her Fellowship in Neuropsychology here. Dr. Chandler’s current professional responsibilities as a board-certified neuropsychologist include a mixture of administration, research, patient care, and teaching. She has been consistently funded for almost 20 years to conduct research into behavioral interventions in aging and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). She co-founded the Healthy Actions to Benefit Independence and Thinking program that provides behavioral interventions and rehabilitation techniques in patients with MCI offered now at multiple major medical centers. She also leads the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation Endowment for the HABIT Program at the Mayo Clinic.  

Speaker #2:    Dona E. Locke, Ph.D.

Dr. Dona Locke is Professor of Psychology and Associate Chair for Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic Arizona. She completed her Fellowship training at Mayo Clinic Rochester in a combination Neuropsychology/Rehabilitation Psychology track and then joined the staff in Arizona in 2005. Clinically, she performs diagnostic neuropsychological evaluations for a broad range of symptom presentations in adults, with a specialization in aging and seizure disorders. She is also director of the HABIT program at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. She has been involved in funded research since joining staff in 2005 to include various grants to develop and evaluate the HABIT program. She is currently PI of the multi-site HABIT Registry research program funded by the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, Neuropsychology director of the Mayo Clinic Arizona site of the Arizona Alzheimer’s Disorder Research Consortium, and Neuropsychology director of the Arizona APOE cohort longitudinal research project.

Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Summarize key findings in nonpharmacological interventions for memory decline with aging and Mild Cognitive Impairment
  2. Describe the HABIT program and its impacts on patients and their care partners
  3. Outline the future of HABIT in the changing treatment landscape of Alzheimer’s disease
