Session date:
04/30/2025 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Speaker #1: Eric Semmel, PhD.

Title: Neuropsychological outcomes in pediatric brain tumor: An overview of risk factors and neuroimaging findings

Introduction: Dr. Semmel is a second-year fellow in pediatric neuropsychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Georgia State University, with a concentration in Neuropsychology & Cognitive Neuroscience, and his clinical internship at Emory University & Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. As a graduate research fellow at the GSU Neuroscience Institute, his work focused on understanding long-term neuropsychological outcomes in survivors of pediatric brain tumors, with a specific interest in improving early identification of patients at risk for poor functional outcomes. With that goal in mind, he is interested in using multivariate patient risk profiles – including tumor and treatment characteristics, neuropsychological testing, functional/structural neuroimaging, genetic markers, and socioeconomic factors – to build more robust predictive models of risk and resilience. Dr. Semmel will be staying on as a pediatric neuropsychologist at Mayo Clinic after graduation this summer.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the most common cognitive deficits seen in pediatric brain tumor survivors

  2. Identify factors that place patients at high risk for poor outcomes

Speaker #2: Jeremiah B. Joyce, M.D., M.S.

Title: Towards quantitative measurement of speech in Bipolar I Disorder

Introduction:  Dr. Jeremiah Joyce is a consult-liaison fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology and a Clinician Investigator Training Program Research Fellow. His research interests including the implementation of technology into clinical psychiatry, speech analysis, and the impact of culture and language into the expression of mental illness.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognizing speech production is a physical process which can be measured

  2. Analyze methods for computationally preprocessing audio files

  3. Compare speech metrics collected across mood episodes in Bipolar I Disorder
