Feminist theory as a psychotherapeutic approach addresses unique stressors that impact women's mental health. The therapeutic relationship becomes a vehicle of change and connection that helps women understand the prevalent sociocultural environments. It empowers them to make positive changes leading to improved outcomes for women and society in general.

Feminist theory discusses the inherent disparities in mental health based on social structures and gender. It is embedded in the values of feminism. Historical perspective on the evolution of psychiatry that considered males as the norm will be highlighted and linked to the present and future of feminism in psychotherapeutic work.
