This presentation will begin with an overview of family-centered care and its guiding principles. The ethical power of family-centered care will be highlighted. Attention then will be paid to ethical dilemmas that emerge in the context of providing family-centered care. Particular attention will be paid to ethical challenges associated with (1) forging a relationship among the care team, patient, and family; (2) balancing promoting patient autonomy with including family considerations , (3) showing respect and dignity to all family members; (4) embracing families as essential partners in care; (5) sharing in decision making; (6) navigating conflicts among parties about care decisions including those related to family presence, genetics testing, and end-of-life. Strategies for effectively addressing these ethical dilemmas will be offered related to creating a culture of patient- and family-centered care; using a systemically-oriented approach to ethically-informed decision-making; and prioritizing culturally-responsive family-centered care. Throughout the presentation, case vignettes will be provided to illustrate key points.
