Hearing through the Patient's Ears: The Impact of Simulation on Hearing Loss and Amplification Education
Empathize with patients who have diagnosed and undiagnosed hearing loss, as well as with their daily communication partners.
- Define prevalence of hearing loss, common configurations, and typical time from diagnosis to treatment.
- Use the Hearing Simulator to demonstrate how common, high-frequency hearing loss can affect speech understanding and music appreciation in quiet environments.
Validate the limitations of amplification (e.g., hearing aids) while describing the benefits of appropriately fit amplification for speech understanding.
- Describe how amplification is fit and works, along with common complaints new patients have, and effects on cognitive health and socializing.
- Demonstrate how hearing loss can affect understanding in background noise with the Crowd and other background noise filters. Demonstrate Hearing Aid filter to show that while Signal-to-Noise ratio is improved, people with hearing aids and normal hearing will still struggle in environments with significant competing background noise.
Demonstrate effective communication strategies in a healthcare setting to best reduce hearing barriers and establish patient understanding.
- Recognize how misunderstanding due to communication barriers (e.g., noisy rooms, difficulty lipreading with masks, not facing patients while talking to them) can cause issues with medical compliance and promote higher return-to-clinic rates.
- Review good communication strategies and practices for all providers along with emphasis on the importance of written materials at an appropriate reading level for critical medical information.
