Dysphagia and Aspiration Pneumonia in Older Adults

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to::

  • Describe age-related changes in swallowing, particularly the oropharyngeal phase.
  • Identify the outcomes and risk factors of dysphagia, including aspiration pneumonia and malnutrition.
  • Formulate an in-office assessment plan for dysphagia, incorporating history, physical exam, clinical evaluation, and appropriate referrals.
  • Evaluate management strategies for dysphagia and aspiration pneumonia, including the risks and benefits of interventions like modified diets and PEG tubes.
