Health Equity and Democracy: The Urgency of Now

PRESENTER
Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MS, FACP

PRESENTER BIO

Dr. Monica Peek is the Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. She is an internist, medical ethicist and health services researcher.

Dr. Peek’s research focuses on structural and social inequities that impact healthcare delivery and health outcomes among marginalized patient populations. She is an Associate Director for the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, and an Associate Director for the Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research. Dr. Peek has served as the principal investigator for grants from institutions such as the Greenwall Foundation, NIH, PCORI, AHRQ, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and others.

She is a Senior Associate Editor for the journal Health Services Research and an Editorial Board Member of Diabetes Care. Dr. Peek is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Peek and her research have been featured in national media outlets such as NPR, PRI/The World, CNN, Democracy Now, CBS, ABC, TIME Magazine, the Christian Science Monitor, STAT News, and The Huffington Post.


LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify ways in which threats to democracy can increase health inequity among socially marginalized populations.
  2. Articulate a normative framework for social justice and equity.
  3. Describe solutions that academic clinicians can undertake to mitigate health inequities.
