In this talk, the director of Revisionary Arts, a nonprofit that offers therapeutic poetry workshops for medically and socially vulnerable communities, caregivers and healthcare providers, and the community at large, will discuss the broader applications of Narrative Medicine, a discipline arguably founded by Dr. Rita Charon (Columbia Med) and designed to train medical students in the art of “radical listening” and narrative reflection.
From pediatric patients to dementia patients, trauma therapy to physician self-care, the delivery of population-specific workshops that employ poetry as a portal to discussion, reflection, introspection, and the subjective re-framing of narratives has been proven efficacious in a variety of ways—from reducing stress and burnout to decreasing pain and increasing self-awareness and hope, this low-cost complimentary intervention may ease the healthcare crisis of the 21st Century.
Rosemarie Dombrowski, PhD, is the inaugural Poet Laureate of Phoenix, AZ. Her poetry, much of which explores medical and psychological trauma and disability, has appeared in numerous publications. She’s published three collections of poetry including The Book of Emergencies (Five Oaks Press), a lyrical exploration of the culture of nonverbal Autism.
Rosemarie is a TEDx speaker (“The Medicinal Value of Poetry,” 2022) as well as the recipient of an Arts Hero award (2017), a Great 48 award (2020), the Arizona Humanities Outstanding Speaker Award (2022), and an AZ Capital Times Leader of the Year Award (2023).
She teaches courses on medical poetry, the poetry of witness, and literature of the marginalized at Arizona State University and is the founding editor of ISSUED: stories of service, a journal for military affiliated peoples. She also serves as the faculty editor of Grey Matter, the medical poetry journal of the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix.
